The
population of the municipality of Targovishte is
63,382 people (2003) - 45.9% of the population of the area.
During the past 5 years there is a trend of demographic reduction
typical for Targovishte Region, North-Eastern Region and Bulgaria.
Negative growth is registered in the center of the municipality
and in villages as a whole. Only in 5 of 51 villages the growth
is positive. The reduction is greatest in some very small
villages of the municipality (Koprets, Koshnichari, Mirovets
– over -10% average growth). Rates of decrease of the population
of the municipality of Targovishte (-1.2%) are similar to
the average for the country (-1.2%) and smaller than the area
(-1.9%).
61.9% (39202 people) of the population of the municipality
and 28.4 percent of the population of the area are concentrated
in the town of Targovishte. The negative growth of the population
of the town is minimal, close to "zero" (-0.2%),
while for the rural population the growth is -2.7% - similar
to that for the country's rural population (-2.6% ) and lower
than average indicators for the rural population of Targovishte
Region (-3.0%).
Changes in the number of population of the municipality are
related to the age structure. The distribution of population
on age groups is more favorable than the average indicators
for the region and country. For the period of 1999-2003, gradually
decrease of the number and the proportion of persons aged
under 15 and from 15 to 64. The adult people (65 years and
over) increase as the number and relative share. The ratio
between the three main age groups for the municipality of
Targovishte (0-14 years: 15-64 years: 65 +) is relatively
favorable (16.5: 68.6: 14.9%). The share of younger generations
is higher than that of older people. Differences in the age
composition of the population in urban areas are significant.
The townof Targovishte is with a favorable age structure (high
proportion of contingents 15-64) and a high proportion of
young people. The age structure of the rural population marks
a process of aging, which is more strongly expressed in many
small villages.
The structure of the population on gender for the municipality
of Targovishte is similar to that of the region and country.
105 women fall to 100 men (average area Targovishte - 104
women, for Bulgaria - 106). The situation is analogous for
urban and rural population of the municipality, region and
country. For the period of 1999-2003 significant changes are
not occurred in the demographic structure.
The natural movement is one of the main components affecting
the dynamics of population and its age structure. In 2003
the municipality of Targovishte 614 children were born. Over
the past years, the number of births ranges 600-700 children.
The coefficient of birth-rate (children born alive per 1000
persons of population) in 2003 was 9,7 ‰ (over the average
for the region - 9,4 ‰ and for the country -8,6 ‰). The trend
in the development of the birth-rate shows minor changes.
Mortality is with higher rates than the birth-rate. In 2003
people died in the municipality is 902 or 14.2 per 1000 persons.
During the last 5 years mortality is in the range 13-14 ‰.
Infant mortality in the municipality of Targovishte is characterized
by versatility. In 2003 infant mortality rate was 13,0 ‰ (similar,
but slightly above average for the country - 12,3 ‰ and lower
than the average for the area - 19,1 ‰). The natural growth
of the municipality of Targovishte is negative. For the period
of 1999-2003, it is the range of -3,1 ‰ for 1999 to -4,5 ‰
for 2003.
In 2003 in the municipality 1210 locations and 1565 emigrations
are carried out. The mechanical growth is negative (-355 persons).
In comparison with previous years, the mechanical movement
of the population retains its negative values, which is typical
for Targovishte Region.
An important feature of the population is the educational
level. The structure of the population by education is observed
in censuses. Between the last two censuses (1992-2001 years)
there is an absolute and relative increase of people with
higher, higher professional (college) and secondary education
in the municipality, which is typical for the area, region
and country. The observed trend of increase of highly educated
individuals also applies to the three components constituting
the group (higher, higher and specialized secondary education)
as it is more expressed in people with higher and secondary
education. The majority of people with high educational level
are at the center of the municipality - the town of Targovishte.
Trends in the development of population are: a gradual reduction
in the general population due to negative natural and migration
growth, aging of the rural population, increasing of the educational
level of the population of the municipality.
The main priorities of the demographic development of the
municipality should be directed to: stabilize and preserve
the population, limiting the adverse trends in demographic
processes, primarily of the net-migration, continuing the
trend of increasing of the educational level of the population
and its participation in various forms of training.
